Getting around Bangkok on a budget

Bangkok, though, is a rejuvenating tonic; the people seem to have found the magic elixir. Life, a visitor feels, has not been wasted on the Thais.

For a long time I was the Taxi user, a convenience lover and applied that bad habit to my travels in Bangkok. Not long into the trip I found most of my time was spent in a taxi, stuck in traffic watching the bustling streets of Bangkok go by.

This was not how I planned to spend my short 4 day trip and decided to try the train system. What I found was convenience, no traffic and money saving so thought I would share my findings with you.

Day trip around the metro

To get around using the Sky Train system you can either buy a 1 way trip ticket which costs THB 20 – 40 per trip. The other option is to buy a Unlimited use day pass for THB 140. This is a great option for sightseeing around the metro however be aware that this day pass is only for the Sky Train and not the subway system.

1 way trip: Simply look for the Ticket machine around the stations, on the top right touch English and then click on the station you want to travel to and pay the amount displayed on the right side. Tip, the machine gives change in coins only so avoid using THB100 or THB1,000 notes.

Day pass: To get this pass simply walk to a Cashier window and ask for a day pass, pay your THB140 and enjoy unlimited travel for the whole day. Note, this is only valid for the day you are traveling in and ends at midnight of the same day

You will receive a 1 way pass card, with this card walk towards the entrance gate and tap it on the scanner to enter. Once you arrive at your destination simply insert the card into the slot and the exit will open for you.

Bangkok to Suvarnabhumi airport

To Travel to and from Suvarnabhumi airport simply go to any of the stations mentioned in the image above and look for the Airport Rail link section. The cost from the Airport to Phaya Thai is a whopping THB 45 per person 1 way and takes only 26 minutes.

Look for the ticket machines. Click the top right for english, select your station you want to go to and pay the amount displayed on the right side. Tip, the machine gives change in coins only so avoid using THB100 or THB1,000 notes.

You will receive a Token, with this token walk towards the entrance gate and tap it on the scanner to enter. Once you arrive at your destination simply insert the token into the slot and the exit will open for you.
